Good words, that help me understand why so many writers are going to Substack subscriptions, which I've resented. I hear your call to pay for what we value, and it's reasonable and right. I pay with my time, so I don't like to be asked for money as well. Still, you make a valid point. Also, I'm delighted that your newsletter is staying free!
Really love this piece, Jen. Your piece makes meI wonder how tempted I might be to use a speech generator if I saw in it the alleviation of my own particular burdens (i.e. finding that one, perfect phrase - that's already on the tip of my tongue, really - or how to best finish off that professional email). I really appreciate the spiritual implications you included. How true, that sloth is the easier, dangerous path, with long-reaching implications. Thank you for writing, Jen!
Your questions/call for discernment around consumption rings true for me. Thank you. I love to accumulate words on multiple platforms... but the amount of content I allow to deeply and slowly form me is significantly smaller. An extra dose of gratitude for your writing work today.

And time is a valuable resource, which is why I try to always acknowledge the honor of being read at all!
So much happens in the struggle to write well, and only a fraction of the gain shows up on the page.
That is so true! And imagine if we - as writers - spared ourselves that struggle! What would we lose?
Fantastic article Jen!
Thanks as always for reading!
